Medical Payments Coverage in Your Auto Policy

Medical payments coverage is available in increments beginning at $5,000 and continuing up to $100,000. Health insurance, which pays for your care after you are injured may have a right to be paid back. In contrast, medical payments coverage does not have a right to be paid back.

Medical payments coverage must first be applied to ambulance and hospital. Medical payments coverage may be limited to the first year following your injuries in an automobile accident. Some insurance companies claim that they don’t have to pay medical payments coverage if you are hit by an uninsured motorist. Instead, they attempt to pay you from uninsured motorist coverage.

Medical payments coverage is important. If the insurance company claims you did not purchase it, they must produce a form signed by you indicating that you chose to decline this coverage.
